  • Accumulate 150 to 300 minutes (2 ½ to 5 hours) of moderate intensity physical activity or 75 to 150 minutes (1 ¼ to 2 ½ hours) of vigorous intensity physical activity, or an equivalent combination of both moderate and vigorous activities, each week.
  • Do muscle strengthening activities on at least two days each week.

Ways to increase activity

Increases in daily activity can come from small changes made throughout your day, such as walking or cycling instead of using the car, getting off a tram, train or bus a stop earlier and walking the rest of the way, or walking the children to school.

See your doctor first

It is a good idea to see your doctor before starting your physical activity program if:

  • you are aged over 45 years
  • physical activity causes pain in your chest
  • you often faint or have spells of severe dizziness
  • moderate physical activity makes you very breathless
  • you are at a higher risk of heart disease
  • you think you might have heart disease or you have heart problems
  • you are pregnant.

Pre-exercise screening is used to identify people with medical conditions that may put them at a higher risk of a experiencing a health problem during physical activity. It is a filter or ‘safety net’ to help decide if the potential benefits of exercise outweigh the risks for you. Usually, the benefits will far outweigh the risks. Print a copy of the adult pre-exercise screening tool and discuss it with your doctor, allied health or exercise professional.

What Audrey said is absolutely true. True beauty comes from within. Yet, women should still take care of themselves. Apply that moisturizer every day, give yourself a manicure and pedicure, put that little bit of effort in with your hair, apply that makeup, at least when you go out. Oh, I almost forgot, even if you don’t have a life partner in your life, you still want to keep those legs smooth.

The beauty of a women. Great look ladies You don’t have to spend hours in a salon to get it done…. Find a good hair dresser, who can cut your hair so that it is easy for you to style. Most hair dressers / stylists will show you how to style your own hair at home. These days, there are so many great wax products on the market, you can even do your own waxing at home. Just do it, or shave every day.

Often, improving your appearance, is not about giving in to expensive cosmetic products or expensive clothing. It is all about following the basic rules of personal hygiene. Care for your teeth as recommended by your dentist, is not only vital for good dental health, but great for a beautiful smile as well.

The same goes for other basic habits, like taking a shower or bath at least once a day and dress in fresh clothes. You don’t necessarily have to clean your clothes every time you have worn them if in winter (apart from underwear), but hang them out for 24 hours before you put them back into your closet.

Something very basic, that may be just another everyday routine for some, are :

  • Cleaning ears
  • Scrubbing feet
  • Exfoliating hands and body
  • Filing nails
  • Washing hair on a regular basis

All these points go way beyond keeping you healthy and are actually vital to an attractive and fresh appearance.

Now, some may ask what did she meant by over dressing…. Don’t be afraid to be overdressed at an event. Dress in what you feel make you look beautiful.

In the Bible, it refers to vanity as one of the 7 deadly sins, yet, I believe that a fair bit of vanity is a blessing rather than a sin. I saw a quote from Karl Lagerfeld that actually made sense to me: “Vanity is the healthiest thing in life”

The way I see that quote, is that people will always take care of themselves if they have some vanity. Not vanity as such alone, but pride as well. You should take pride in yourself and one way to express that, is through your appearance.

Remember, it is your appearance that will help you get that promotion that you applied for, the job that you applied for, the business deal you worked so hard for and will help in so many other ways. On the negative side….your appearance may just as well break it for you as well, if you don’t spend time to make sure your appearance is just right.

We live in a very visually receptive world so YES, ‘ Your First Impression Does Count’.

It is important to understand we have all come from different backgrounds and some of you will have more of a keen eye for detail and more knowledge of how important it is to enhance your appearance, by the clothes you wear and by presenting yourself. By taking pride in your appearance, you’re telling the world that you care about yourself. The importance you do place on yourself, will certainly resonate with every aspect of your life and especially, that important job you have been trying to land or a new relationship for example.

When you’re on the path to finding success in the business world, your sense of style and your appearance will speak confidence.  When you are presenting yourself to a potential employer, what you are speaking in terms of appearance, will speak a thousand words as to how you reflect what your future employer will be looking for. Confidence, professionalism, trust, responsibility and your capabilities are what your ‘First Impression’ will emulate, by paying attention to your appearance.

There are many places that you may get your inspiration from. If you have a fashion designer who design specifically for you, then you are more fortunate than many other women. Your designer may advise you on where and how to get your fashion and style inspiration as well. Although your designer may know exactly what colors will suit you, or what type of blouse, skirt, pants or dress you should wear regarding to your body type, it is still you, at the end of the day who has to decide what you are going to wear.

It is good to sit and think what kind of style you would want. Take in consideration what your situation is. Are you single without any children, married with or without children. Your career will also have an impact on your style. If you have your own business and you work with other business owners, it is advised that you get to know what they are doing and dress elegantly.

Fashion style and inspiration You can still wear a suit, yet keep it elegant. Remember, you are not working for a boss who dictates that you have to wear black. On the other hand, unless your business is very casual, like you entertain children, don’t make your style too casual either. Even if you are your own boss, don’t wear tight pants and a T-shirt when you do business with other business owners. Rather create a style that is elegant. You can still have your own individual style with lovely elegant suits or dresses. Even if you decide that you don’t like suits, rather go for elegance than casual. Remember, a suit is not always black with a white blouse.

Everything comes down to feeling great in your own skin—your style ought to reflect and commend your life, your independence, and identity. You can vary the height of the heels so you’re not putting your feet under pressure every day in the same position, which would be kinder to your feet. By wearing different heel heights it will keep your leg muscles feeling flexible and looking shapelier as well. To add to the comfort of high heels, if you need to wear them, you could look for insoles or seek a podiatrist that will be able to assist you in making sure you are taking good care of your feet by giving them as much support as possible.

The right shoe is vital for the health of your feet. When you’re shopping for shoes, each style or brand of shoe may not be the same as the next. Which is why if you’re a size 7, it doesn’t necessarily mean all the shoes you try on will be the same size. If the shoe that you try on is too tight, go up one size. Some brands have “half” sizes and you may want to try your size and a half. You don’t always have to wear the size you normally wear if the size up is a better fit. Your foot should not be too wide for the shoe and you should be able to wiggle your toes at the tip of the shoe, making sure there is enough room to move.

It’s a good idea to get a foot care routine happening, for keeping your feet feeling healthy and hygienic. There are many conditions such as calluses, bunions and athletes foot for example, that can leave your feet feeling very sore at the end of the day. Caring for your feet will leave them feeling healthier and in great shape.

Here are a few Foot Care tips:

  1. It is always important to wash your feet on a daily basis. Your feet is the one part of your body that gets sweatier than any other part. Getting into the habit of keeping your feet clean is important by routinely washing your feet of a morning and of a night time. There is nothing better than climbing into bed with clean, moisturized feet.
  2. When you wash your feet, wash them with warm water only and a little soap. Foot Care This will rid your feet of any sweat or dirt. This will also wash any bacteria away from in between your toes and feet. While your feet are still wet, clean underneath the tone nails to make sure nothing stays there. Even if you wear closed shoes everyday, there will be some dead skin under the tone nails that needs to be removed.   3. With a soft towel, dry your feet well and especially between the toes. If you don’t dry your toes, cracks can appear and get itchy while sometimes bleeding. This can be extremely uncomfortable. It’s often a good breeding ground for bacteria if you don’t dry between your toes.
  4. It’s important to trim your toe nails regularly to keep them clean. This will keep them in a healthy condition. Learning how to trim them properly will help to avoid ingrown toenails. To avoid an ingrown toenail, cut straight across without trimming the edges to a curve. Some people prefer to have a pedicure but if you do choose to trim your nails yourself, nail clippers can often do the job better than small scissors. After clipping the nails, file them to make the sharp edges a little Foot Care softer.
  5. Moisturizing your feet daily will help soften and keep dryness at bay. If you have any calluses or dry areas, exfoliate before you apply your moisturizer. It is important to remember to keep the moisturizer away from in between your toes. Keeping the spaces between your toes dry will stop them from cracking and bleeding and creating a place for fungus to grow. Buy a lotion or cream that draws moisture into the skin would be a great investment.

If you follow this routine on a regular basis, you don’t even have to visit the salon anymore for your regular pedicure….maybe only for a treat.

Confidence comes from being happy and content with who you are.

A good way to grow your confidence is to keep a diary in order to remind yourself of your strengths and your achievements. Writing your daily positive thoughts and achievements, creates the feeling of gratitude, in understanding your capabilities and achievements on a daily basis. Keeping a diary also enables you to take note of the amount of growth you have developed over time.

When you have an understanding of your strengths and your own personal traits, you’ll begin to develop a positive mindset, which, in turn will develop a stronger self-confidence.

As a result, your inner beauty will glow an shine through when you are confident with who you are.

‘Self-esteem is your opinion of yourself. People with healthy self-esteem like themselves and value their achievements. While everyone lacks confidence occasionally, people with low self-esteem feel unhappy or unsatisfied with themselves most of the time. This can be remedied but it takes attention and daily practice to boost self-esteem.

Characteristics of low self-esteem

 

Typically, a person with low self-esteem:

  • Is extremely critical of themselves
  • Downplays or ignores their positive qualities
  • Judges themselves to be inferior to their peers
  • Uses negative words to describe themselves such as stupid, fat, ugly or unlovable
  • Has discussions with themselves (this is called ‘self talk’) that are always negative, critical and self blaming
  • Assumes that luck plays a large role in all their achievements and doesn’t take the credit for them
  • Blames themselves when things go wrong instead of taking into account other things over which they have no control such as the actions of other people or economic forces
  • Doesn’t believe a person who compliments them.

Low self-esteem and quality of life

 

A low self-esteem can reduce the quality of a person’s life in many different ways, including:

  • Negative feelings – the constant self-criticism can lead to persistent feelings of sadness, depression, anxiety, anger, shame or guilt.
  • Relationship problems – for example they may tolerate all sorts of unreasonable behaviour from partners because they believe they must earn love and friendship, cannot be loved or are not loveable. Alternatively, a person with low self-esteem may feel angry and bully other people.
  • Fear of trying – the person may doubt their abilities or worth and avoid challenges.
  • Perfectionism – a person may push themselves and become an over-achiever to ‘atone’ for what they see as their inferiority.
  • Fear of judgement – they may avoid activities that involve other people, like sports or social events, because they are afraid they will be negatively judged. The person feels self-conscious and stressed around others and constantly looks for ‘signs’ that people don’t like them.
  • Low resilience – a person with low self-esteem finds it hard to cope with a challenging life event because they already believe themselves to be ‘hopeless’.
  • Lack of self-care – the person may care so little that they neglect or abuse themselves, for example, drink too much alcohol.
  • Self-harming behaviours – low self-esteem puts the person at increased risk of self-harm, for example, eating disorder, drug abuse or suicide.

Causes of low self-esteem

 

Some of the many causes of low self-esteem may include:

  • Unhappy childhood where parents (or other significant people such as teachers) were extremely critical
  • Poor academic performance in school resulting in a lack of confidence
  • Ongoing stressful life event such as relationship breakdown or financial trouble
  • Poor treatment from a partner, parent or carer, for example, being in an abusive relationship
  • Ongoing medical problem such as chronic pain, serious illness or physical disability
  • Mental illness such as an anxiety disorder or depression.

Seek help for underlying self-esteem problems

Chronic problems can be demoralizing and lead to self-esteem issues. Seek professional advice for problems such as relationship breakdown, anxiety disorder or financial worries.

Self-esteem building

 

Self-esteem is strongly related to how you view and react to the things that happen in your life. Suggestions for building self-esteem include:

  • Talk to yourself positively – treat yourself as you would your best friend. Be supportive, kind and understanding. Don’t be hard on yourself when you make a mistake.
  • Challenge negative ‘self-talk’ – every time you criticise yourself, stop and look for objective evidence that the criticism is true. (If you feel you can’t be objective, then ask a trusted friend for their opinion.) You’ll realise that most of your negative self-talk is unfounded.
  • Don’t compare yourself to others – recognise that everyone is different and that every human life has value in its own right. Make an effort to accept yourself, warts and all.
  • Acknowledge the positive – for example, don’t brush off compliments, dismiss your achievements as ‘dumb luck’ or ignore your positive traits.
  • Appreciate your special qualities – remind yourself of your good points every day. Write a list and refer to it often. (If you feel you can’t think of anything good about yourself, ask a trusted friend to help you write the list.)
  • Forget the past – concentrate on living in the here-and-now rather than reliving old hurts and disappointments.
  • Tell yourself a positive message everyday – buy a set of ‘inspirational cards’ and start each day reading out a new card and carrying the card’s message with you all day.
  • Stop worrying – ‘worry’ is simply fretting about the future. Accept that you can’t see or change the future and try to keep your thoughts in the here-and-now.
  • Have fun – schedule enjoyable events and activities into every week.
  • Exercise – it is such a good boost to the brain for all kinds of things but especially in combatting depression and helping you to feel good. Targets need to be step by step, such as starting with a walk round the block once a day, enrolling at a local gym class or going for a swim.
  • Be assertive – communicate your needs, wants, feelings, beliefs and opinions to others in a direct and honest manner.
  • Practise the above suggestions every day – it takes effort and vigilance to replace unhelpful thoughts and behaviours with healthier versions. Give yourself time to establish the new habits. Keep a diary or journal to chart your progress.

Your feet

Your feet bear the burden of our day to day living, they carry all the weight of your body and allow you to be mobile. It is important to take care of your feet and make sure that they are in a good condition to be able to take the strain.

Your feet – indicators of health

Because they are so far away from your heart, your feet are often the first part of the body to show something is wrong with the way blood is circulating.

The condition of your toenails can signal the presence of the beginning of several diseases. For example, toenails that are thin, upward curving and with raised ridges on the surface can indicate iron deficiency or anemia (a shortage of iron carried by the blood). Increased nail thickness, or bumps on the nail, can be manifestations of psoriasis, an inherited skin condition.

Your podiatrist will check the condition of your toenails and can discuss the health implications of their appearance or provide a range of treatments for some toenail problems.

The major parts of the toenail are: the nail itself (nail plate); the matrix, from where the nail grows; the lunula, the white moon-shaped area at the base of the nail; the nail bed, the tissue on which the nail lies; and the sulcus, the groove at the side in which the nail sits.

Toenails grow constantly. Healthy nails are pink, free of dirt and impairment and grow along the grooves normally. It takes up to 12 months to replace the toenail of your big toe.

Who gets nail problems?

Toenails of people of all ages can undergo a range of changes, come of which are relatively common. They can become thick, brittle, curved, discolored, infected, bumpy and grooved. In some cases, the nail falls off and a new one grows. As we grow older, we are more likely to develop toenail problems.

What causes nail problems?

Toenail problems may be causes by warts, tumors under the nail, trauma, infection or poor circulation. Major toenail problems can be caused by incorrectly fitting shoes, which press too tightly on the toenails. Injury, such as bruising under the nail and infection, can cause permanent nail deformity.

Common conditions and treatment

Ingrown toenails are common toenail problems. They may be caused by improperly trimmed toenails, very curved edges of nails, pressure or repeated trauma to the feet from normal activities. The tendency to get ingrown toenails may also be inherited. Pain in the groove (sulcus) of the toenail can also be due to a corn or callus under the nail edge.

Most cases will require conservative treatment, while others may need a minor surgical correction that can conducted in your podiatrist’s rooms using a local anaesthetic.

Thickened nails: is a common condition; a single thickened nail is usually the result of injury to the nail bed, such as dropping something heavy on your toes, or fungal infection. They can be easily and painlessly thinned down by your podiatrist.

Fungal infections: are amongst the most troublesome of nail conditions to treat. They are often characterised by thickening, discolouration and separation of the nail from the nail bed. In some cases, the nail crumbles. These infections tend to stay in the nail if they are not treated, and can infect the nail bed.

There are a range of anti-fungal medications available for treatment. Your podiatrist can assist with trimming and care of out-of-shape nails.

Other infections: causes inflammation of the matric (onychia) and inflammation of the tissue adjacent to the nail (paronychia). In people with lowered immunity, this may lead to serious complications, including more widespread infection extending up the leg. Your podiatrist can assist in detecting such infections early and form a suitable treatment plan.

Trauma: to the nails may lead to permanent nail deformity. This can be cared for by regular, non-painful podiatric treatment, involving filing and possibly the use of a special drill.

Older people

Older people with poor circulation are prone to fragile, brittle or thickened nails.

Many older people do not have the strength, flexibility or eyesight to trim their nails, especially if the nails are deformed. They should seek podiatric care for these services and give advice regarding safe self-care.

Warning signs

Any sudden changed in color or shape of the nail, sign of infection, development of a freckle under the nail or pain should be discussed with your podiatrist. Your portraitist can diagnose the problem and then offer an appropriate treatment.

Taking care of your nails

Your feet

  • Trim toenails straight across to a length just below the end of the toe
  • Use a strong pair of nail clippers
  • After clipping, smooth nails with a file or emery board, using downward strokes
  • Wear only properly fitted shoes, not short or narrow ones
  • Wash feet regularly especially between the toes, and dry thoroughly

Wear socks or stockings that are not too restrictive, unless they’re prescribed.
