Where to get your Fashion Inspiration

Where to get your

Fashion Inspiration

Where to get your fashion inspiration

Fashion is and always will be an exciting topic in many circles of life. There will always be new fashion trends and it will be advertised in the latest fashion magazines. The latest fashion trends will be seen in fashion stores. All these trends may confuse you, since they are only trends and does not necessarily relate to what you can or can’t wear.

You have to, at all times, be honest with yourself when you want to wear something. That is something that is very important when you create your own individual style. Keep that in mind when you decide where to get your fashion inspiration from.

Where to get your fashion inspiration

‘You might think that the best places to get your fashion inspiration are from the well-spring of fashion design – from newly revealed fashion collections, from the catwalk, perhaps from the movies, TV and music stars who debut collections on the red carpets.

It can be great fun for people interested in fashion to follow these things, but for ordinary women, living in the real world, it is better to be a little more down to earth when you seek out your own fashion inspiration.

You don’t have to copy the stars to be one! Here are some suggestions for places to look to be inspired:

Your Own Wardrobe

It may sound odd to say that your own wardrobe can inspire you but it is true. Taking a look through the clothes you have loved, and those that have perhaps not worked so well for you, you can begin to hone your own unique sense of what suits you and what does not. You can see your way forward more clearly when you look where you have been.

The High Street

Where to get your fashion inspiration Sometimes, simply watching the world go by can help you to hone your fashion sense and create your own personal fashion look. You may privately hate nine out of ten of the outfits you see other women wearing but if you think not just what they have done wrong but also why it is wrong – you might begin to see how you might put it right and that can only help you with your own style.

Friends and Family

Again, what not to do can be as important as what to do, so even if most of your friends and family are not the epitome of chic style, you can still learn a lot from each other. If your friend wears an outfit that you love, simply look at it and analyse why it looks so good on her. Would it look as good on you? If not, why not? How might you adapt it to suit you? These are the beginnings of fashion inspiration.

The Past

Where to get your fashion inspiration Fashion tends to move fast but fast fashion will not always look good on you if you are not six foot tall and a size zero. Take inspiration, not just from the very latest things, but also from the cool fashion trends of the past. Vintage style can hold some real gems. Inspiration can definitely come from the past, as well as the present and the imagined future.

The World

It is important not to have narrow horizons when it comes to fashion. Travel is a great boon to those who are seeking style inspiration. You should think about getting out there and seeing the wider world – that way you open yourself to a whole new world of style inspiration and adventure.

Keep your eyes open because if you are imaginative and observant, fashion inspiration can come from just about anywhere.’

Physical activity. Great Look Ladies When you do any physical activity with friends, it is even better. It is way more fun to do it with friends, rather than on your own. Of course, sometimes it is not possible to to do any physical activity with your friends. They may not be at the same fitness level as you, or the time may not be suitable for you. Don’t let that put you off from doing any physical activity. Go solo, if there is nobody who can do it with you. Just get moving, if you don’t do it already.

Not only should you use physical activity to improve appearance, there are many other benefits of regular physical activity as well. It is important to know how people may benefit from doing regular physical activities.

Benefits of regular physical activity

Use of Physical Activity to Improve Appearance

  • reduce your risk of a heart attack
  • manage your weight better
  • have a lower blood cholesterol level
  • lower the risk of type 2 diabetes and some cancers

Increased fitness may lift your mood and improve sleep patterns. Exercise may also change levels of chemicals in your brain, such as serotonin, endorphins and stress hormones.

Physical Activity Guidelines

Use of Physical Activity to Improve Appearance

The Australian Government’s Physical Activity Guidelines state that:

  • Doing any physical activity is better than doing none. If you currently do no physical activity, start by doing some, and gradually build up to the recommended amount.
  • Be active on most, preferably all, days every week.
  • Accumulate 150 to 300 minutes (2 ½ to 5 hours) of moderate intensity physical activity or 75 to 150 minutes (1 ¼ to 2 ½ hours) of vigorous intensity physical activity, or an equivalent combination of both moderate and vigorous activities, each week.
  • Do muscle strengthening activities on at least two days each week.

Ways to increase activity

Increases in daily activity can come from small changes made throughout your day, such as walking or cycling instead of using the car, getting off a tram, train or bus a stop earlier and walking the rest of the way, or walking the children to school.

See your doctor first

It is a good idea to see your doctor before starting your physical activity program if:

  • you are aged over 45 years
  • physical activity causes pain in your chest
  • you often faint or have spells of severe dizziness
  • moderate physical activity makes you very breathless
  • you are at a higher risk of heart disease
  • you think you might have heart disease or you have heart problems
  • you are pregnant.

Pre-exercise screening is used to identify people with medical conditions that may put them at a higher risk of a experiencing a health problem during physical activity. It is a filter or ‘safety net’ to help decide if the potential benefits of exercise outweigh the risks for you. Usually, the benefits will far outweigh the risks. Print a copy of the adult pre-exercise screening tool and discuss it with your doctor, allied health or exercise professional.

Footwear at Work

Footwear at Work

We all have to wear shoes to work, whether you have your own business or being employed by somebody or a company. Your footwear at work, will determine how tired your feet are at the end of the work day.

Our feet bear the extraordinary burden of our day to day living, they support all the weight of our body and allow us to be mobile. It’s important our feet are well supported and protected, so shoes play a vital role in this.

The Ideal Shoe

There is no such thing as the one perfect shoe. Feet come in many shapes and sizes, and undertake a range of different activities depending on your particular lifestyle. Generally though, when you buy new shoes, its important to make sure;

  • They fit properly
  • They are supportive for the kind of activity you will be wearing them for
  • They do not cause damage to your feet or hurt you in anyway

The Importance of a Good Fit

Choosing shoes that fit well is an important part of caring for your feet. Finding the right fit may mean you have to look at a few different styles to accommodate your particular foot shape. Because feet are rarely the same size it is important that you fit your shoes to your larger foot. An experienced footwear sales person can help you with this. Since most shoe manufacturers have their own size range, you should make decisions on what feels best for your feet.

People who have misshapen feet from an injury or medical condition such as arthritis or diabetes, may require shoes with extra depth or width. Some people may require orthoses (inserts). Occasionally, a custom made shoe will be the most suitable.

Shoe Buying Tips

When buying new shoes keep in mind the following;

Materials: Leather is generally preferred for shoe uppers, however synthetics developed with specific beneficial properties, e.g. stretch may be preferable for some foot deformities. Synthetic or rubbers are best for the sole as they are often more durable, shock absorbent and provide better grip.

Security: Shoes should be secured on the feet with laces, straps or buckles, especially walking shoes. If your feet have to work to hold your shoes in place you foot muscles may end up strained.

Shape: Pointy shoes can make your toes “claw”. This may affect overall body posture. Clenched toes can also cause rubbing, leading to corns and calluses. broad toe shoes allow the toes more room and can help prevent pressure injuries

Also check the following:

Footwear at work

  • The heel of the shoe is less then 2.5cm high, high heels increase the pressure on the ball of the foot.
  • Your shoes have a well padded sole, a cushioned sol absorbs shock and reduces pressure on the feet
  • Your shoes are made from a material that breathers, fungal infections such as tinea love a warm, moist environment, absorptive socks can help draw moisture away.

Your shoes protect you from injury, your feet must be protected from your immediate environment. People with reduced sensation or circulation need to be especially careful they do not injure their feet.

Footwear at Work

If you work in a field that increases the chance of injuring your feet then safety shoes are vital. Safety shoes and boots protect your feet, help prevent injuries and can help reduce the severity of injuries that can occur in the workplace.

Some extra tips:

  • Your toes should not touch the end of your shoes or you may damage your nails and toes – you need a gap of about 1cm from the end of your longest toe
  • Shoes should be broad enough and deep enough for your foot, if you can see an outline of your foot pressing against your shoe that its probably the wrong fit
  • Don’t buy shoes that need breaking in, shoes should be comfortable immediately

Shop for shoes later in the day, most people’s feet tend to swell during the day and it is best to fit shoes when they are at their largest. Source: Podiatry.asn

The Beauty of a Woman

The Beauty of a Woman

Audrey Hepburn said: “The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode, but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives and the passion that she shows. The beauty of a woman grows with the passing years”

What Audrey said is absolutely true. True beauty comes from within. Yet, women should still take care of themselves. Apply that moisturizer every day, give yourself a manicure and pedicure, put that little bit of effort in with your hair, apply that makeup, at least when you go out. Oh, I almost forgot, even if you don’t have a life partner in your life, you still want to keep those legs smooth.

The beauty of a women. Great look ladies You don’t have to spend hours in a salon to get it done…. Find a good hair dresser, who can cut your hair so that it is easy for you to style. Most hair dressers / stylists will show you how to style your own hair at home. These days, there are so many great wax products on the market, you can even do your own waxing at home. Just do it, or shave every day.

Often, improving your appearance, is not about giving in to expensive cosmetic products or expensive clothing. It is all about following the basic rules of personal hygiene. Care for your teeth as recommended by your dentist, is not only vital for good dental health, but great for a beautiful smile as well.

The same goes for other basic habits, like taking a shower or bath at least once a day and dress in fresh clothes. You don’t necessarily have to clean your clothes every time you have worn them if in winter (apart from underwear), but hang them out for 24 hours before you put them back into your closet.

Something very basic, that may be just another everyday routine for some, are :

  • Cleaning ears
  • Scrubbing feet
  • Exfoliating hands and body
  • Filing nails
  • Washing hair on a regular basis

All these points go way beyond keeping you healthy and are actually vital to an attractive and fresh appearance.

The beauty of a women. Great look ladies Something else Audrey Hepburn said: “I believe in Manicures. I believe in overdressing. I believe in primping at leisure and wearing lipstick. I believe in pink. I believe happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and…. I believe in miracles.”

Now, some may ask what did she meant by over dressing…. Don’t be afraid to be overdressed at an event. Dress in what you feel make you look beautiful.

In the Bible, it refers to vanity as one of the 7 deadly sins, yet, I believe that a fair bit of vanity is a blessing rather than a sin. I saw a quote from Karl Lagerfeld that actually made sense to me: “Vanity is the healthiest thing in life”

The way I see that quote, is that people will always take care of themselves if they have some vanity. Not vanity as such alone, but pride as well. You should take pride in yourself and one way to express that, is through your appearance.

Remember, it is your appearance that will help you get that promotion that you applied for, the job that you applied for, the business deal you worked so hard for and will help in so many other ways. On the negative side….your appearance may just as well break it for you as well, if you don’t spend time to make sure your appearance is just right.

First Impression

First Impression

First impression. Great Look Ladies

How often do you hear the words ‘ Your First Impression Count?’

We live in a very visually receptive world so YES, ‘ Your First Impression Does Count’.

It is important to understand we have all come from different backgrounds and some of you will have more of a keen eye for detail and more knowledge of how important it is to enhance your appearance, by the clothes you wear and by presenting yourself. By taking pride in your appearance, you’re telling the world that you care about yourself. The importance you do place on yourself, will certainly resonate with every aspect of your life and especially, that important job you have been trying to land or a new relationship for example.

When you’re on the path to finding success in the business world, your sense of style and your appearance will speak confidence.  When you are presenting yourself to a potential employer, what you are speaking in terms of appearance, will speak a thousand words as to how you reflect what your future employer will be looking for. Confidence, professionalism, trust, responsibility and your capabilities are what your ‘First Impression’ will emulate, by paying attention to your appearance.

First impression. Great Look Ladies It really is not a secret that your appearance and sense of style will make an important first impression and will affect how you are perceived by some. As an example, if you hold yourself with confidence in an interview, you may notice, even before you get a chance to deliver your speech, an impression had been made already. This is what you really want to aim for. Create the first impression that will reflect that you take pride in your appearance and show confidence in yourself. This evidence will say that you respect and take pride in all aspects of your life.

It is important to recognize the fact that whether it is for the business world or for every day enterprises, it is crucial to remember you are worth the time and the effort to look your best.  You don’t have to spend a mountain of time or money to look good. It is understandable to note there are times, when we do let ourselves go, but you don’t have to. You are worth the time and attention to make the most of your personal attributes. When you don’t care about your appearance, everything around you can often fall by the way side. This can happen very slowly without you sometimes even realizing that it is happening. If you have ever been down that pathway, you may have noticed that not only do you stop caring about yourself, but all the other aspects about your life, including people around you become meaningless.

First impression. Great Look Ladies In today’s world, the importance placed on appearances is a very important factor to consider. In the search of career advancements and moving up the ladder towards seeking that promotion, the level of competition can be tough. Assessing your abilities and considering how you can plan to make that presentation impress, your appearance is an important consideration in helping create lasting impressions.

In today’s competitive world, it is essential to make a strong first impression and there are many ways to enhance your appearance. It isn’t always an option for some people to be able to spend a lot of money on clothes and we understand this. You can obtain your wardrobe from many outlets, where shelling out a lot of money isn’t necessary. In fact you can have a complete wardrobe without requiring a lot of clothes or having to spend a lot. It’s important to dress for comfort and you don’t need to spend a lot to feel comfortable. Being comfortable, also equals confidence. Confidence can speak a thousand words without even really saying a word.

Choices are all about what you can afford. Even if you can afford to spend more, finding the quality, the right fabric and the correct color doesn’t always mean you have to spend a fortune. There are always options for your style. It is developing a very keen eye for detail and experimenting with clothes, textures and colors that will leave you with an exceptional wardrobe that will do you well for a long time to come.

First impression. Great Look Ladies When you’re considering the clothes that are required to suit your profession or for every day purposes, the place to start is to understand your own body shape. The type of clothing you do end up buying will depend on what suits your body shape, including the colors and the materials. You may have considered and re-assessed after reading these past points, that at this point in time some clothes you have in your wardrobe are now a detriment to your personal style and shape. Without the correct knowledge, you could be doing yourself a complete disservice.

What you’re aiming to achieve, is to get the right look for your body shape.  You will want to take a good look at your figure with the importance of gathering an overall image. This practice takes a fair amount of self-awareness.  Really look at yourself in front of a full length mirror and be truthful about your body image and create a clear image of how you actually look. Translate this picture into the shape you are, be happy with your figure and know there are ways to enhance some of those images about yourself that you may not particularly like.

When you’re examining your shape and thinking what will look good, following the latest fashions shouldn’t be a factor in determining your wardrobe. It is more important to purchase what suits you and what you will feel comfortable and confident in. With confidence and comfort in mind, it is about finding that balance and finding the clothes that will achieve that look for you.

Fashion and Style Inspirations

Fashion and Style Inspirations

Fashion style and inspiration

To create your own individual style is great fun! Of course, it may change from time to time as your life changes over time, yet, you need to get your fashion and style inspiration from somewhere. Not only is it fun, it is essential to have your own individual style if you have your  own business and work with other people.

There are many places that you may get your inspiration from. If you have a fashion designer who design specifically for you, then you are more fortunate than many other women. Your designer may advise you on where and how to get your fashion and style inspiration as well. Although your designer may know exactly what colors will suit you, or what type of blouse, skirt, pants or dress you should wear regarding to your body type, it is still you, at the end of the day who has to decide what you are going to wear.

It is good to sit and think what kind of style you would want. Take in consideration what your situation is. Are you single without any children, married with or without children. Your career will also have an impact on your style. If you have your own business and you work with other business owners, it is advised that you get to know what they are doing and dress elegantly.

Fashion style and inspiration You can still wear a suit, yet keep it elegant. Remember, you are not working for a boss who dictates that you have to wear black. On the other hand, unless your business is very casual, like you entertain children, don’t make your style too casual either. Even if you are your own boss, don’t wear tight pants and a T-shirt when you do business with other business owners. Rather create a style that is elegant. You can still have your own individual style with lovely elegant suits or dresses. Even if you decide that you don’t like suits, rather go for elegance than casual. Remember, a suit is not always black with a white blouse.

If you are clueless, perhaps you may want to consider looking  in magazines to get your fashion and style inspiration. Perhaps you can look at a few celebrities for some fashion and style inspiration. You may see something in the different styles of different celebrities and create your own individual style from different styles of other people.

Fashion and Style inspirations from celebrities.

Fashion style and inspiration People have followed the styles of many celebrities is the past. Madonna, for instance, is a great example. In the 80’s her style was copied by many teenage girls. Since her style changed so many times over the years, some people followed her style again and again.

Another great example was Princess Diana. Her elegant style was followed and copied by many. Even fashion designers used her style as an inspiration to create elegant garments for their clients.

The absolute most critical thing when building up your style is to be consistent with yourself. Try not to concentrate on the size or the creator name (this will just impede your inventiveness!). Keep on experimenting with various examples, surfaces, adornments, and shoes. Everything comes down to feeling great in your own skin—your style ought to reflect and commend your life, your independence, and identity. Possess your style, be pleased with it, and hold onto mold as an approach to express your identity and who you need to be.

In other words, it is mainly your own style that should be your fashion inspiration. The above mentioned fashion and style inspiration ideas should be only a guide. At the end of the day, it will be you who are wearing the clothes, accessories and makeup that you buy. Make sure that you are comfortable wearing your style that you have created for yourself.

Beauty from the Inside

Beauty from the Inside

How much time do you invest into looking after your beauty from the inside?

Although your outer appearance is an important factor in developing relationships, by creating that first impression, often people under-estimate, taking the time to invest in them selves.

First impressions account for how you come across to others, whether it is in the way you speak, your demeanor, your confidence levels, your positivity or your natural radiance. Every part of your being has an impact on how you are interpreted by others.

When you have discovered what makes you tick, you will feel good with who you are, you will ooze radiance and confidence and your inner strengths will shine.

There are a few areas to discuss that can help you to develop a more radiant beauty from the inside.

Beauty from the inside

What is Beauty from the Inside?

It comes down to values and beliefs – having an awareness of your personal values will help you to develop more skills, make better informed decisions and choices and help you to create the life you want to live. When you have discovered what makes you tick you’ll discover how your inner beauty can enhance your outer beauty.

“Define what your brand stands for, its core values and tone of voice, and then communicate consistently in those terms”. Simon Mainwaring

To enrich your life means you are living according to what you believe your true values and beliefs to be. Get to know yourself and be happy with yourself.

Your values will be determined by your own beliefs. By saying this, it means that when you make a decision it will be based entirely on evidence. It doesn’t mean that you make a decision based on what someone down the street told you, it is making an individual assessment and decision based on your own set of values and beliefs.

The importance of discovering your values is having the self-awareness to not influence others decisions, that are based on your values. You can certainly explore your own values which will help you to develop you. Knowing your values will help you develop better relationships and you will begin to attract the right people into your life.

Your own values can help you to change your life for the better. Developing your true potential can be life changing. It is important to live a life that is authentic to you. You may outgrow some people at this time but this is just part of your journey in self-discovery.

Having the ability to know and understand your values and beliefs will benefit your future and help you to create much success in your life.

Beauty from the inside

Confidence – you can build on your confidence when you are aware of what your values and your beliefs are. Your beliefs and values are crucial in developing your self-confidence. Having direction and some goals will help you to build your self-esteem, authenticity, integrity and wisdom. You can develop your authenticity by having an awareness of yourself.

“I had to grow to love my body. I did not have a good self-image at first. Finally it occurred to me, I’m either going to love me or hate me. And I chose to love myself. Then everything kind of sprung from there. Things that I thought weren’t attractive became sexy. Confidence makes you sexy.” Queen Latifah

Confidence comes from being happy and content with who you are. A good way to grow your confidence is to keep a diary to remind yourself of your strengths and your achievements. Writing your daily positive thoughts and achievements, creates the feeling of gratitude in understanding your capabilities and achievements on a daily basis. Keeping a diary also enables you to take note of the amount of growth you have developed over time.

When you have an understanding of your strengths and your own personal traits you’ll begin to develop a positive mindset, which will in turn develop your self-confidence.

Your self-esteem and confidence will develop and your inner beauty will glow when you are confident with who you are.

Resilience – when you have the ability and adaptability to bounce back by adverse situations. If you have ever been faced with a crisis situation such as financial, family or health problems, you will have noticed that your own unique individual traits will leave you feeling optimistic or pessimistic depending on how well you have discovered your own coping abilities.

Resilience comes from working on your own unique personal and individual qualities. It is not really a trait that comes easily and is a process to work through. Understanding your own unique qualities, and your ability to navigate through tough times, learning to balance negative and positive thoughts and emotions will create a place where you will be able to demonstrate resilience in a positive way.

Beauty from the inside

Resilience isn’t a single skill. It’s a variety of skills and coping mechanisms. To bounce back from bumps in the road as well as failures, you should focus on emphasizing the positive. Jean Chatzky

Crisis and set backs are unfortunately not often easy to deal with. Knowing how to cope with adversity and having the confidence in being able to cope in these situations is having the strategies to deal with adversity.

Coping with stress is different for everyone. If you can find ways that will help you to cope with stress this will be helpful. There are many things you can try to help relieve stress which can include, exercise, writing down your achievements and any goals you have, meditation, yoga or reading a book. It is also important to have your support networks around you.

Achieving your ability to adapt to adversity, is building on your values and knowing your strengths. It is important to have confidence in yourself and your own abilities. By working on your own values you are also learning how to problem solve and cope in certain situations. These skills can take time but having a hold on what is important to you and how you cope with certain situations that will arise in your life, will enhance your coping abilities and in time create resilience.

Your inner beauty will go to higher levels when you have discovered how to cope in diverse situations.

Mindfulness – is a great tool to help you feel better, relax, de-stress and to pay attention to your thoughts.

Beauty from the inside How much time do you actually get to spend by yourself in the day? We live such busy lives, so finding 30 minutes to sit in a quiet is spot, often a nearly impossible task to do. Which is why, when you are busy rushing around, it is important for your mind to relax and to achieve some kind of peace. Strive to end the day on a positive note.

Foot Care

Foot Care

Foot Care

We often forget about the importance of our feet and the right foot care is most important to add to a healthy life style. They take the weight of our bodies each and every day and depending on what our day entails, the right type of shoe is an important factor to take in to consideration with keeping your feet in top condition.  Creating comfort and support for your feet and finding the right foot wear is imperative, depending on the type of activities you do during the day.

Whether you’re standing or sitting all day, deciding what to wear on your feet needs consideration. It takes looking after your feet, for them to feel comfortable and fully functional each and every day. Depending on what you do during the day, a pair of shoes should allow for your toes to move freely about, without being squashed to the end of the shoe.

If you work in an office the requirements of your job may leave you with restrictions, with regards to what you need to wear as opposed to what you should wear. High heels look great, but you should try to limit wearing these when you have to rush around on your feet all day. High heels tend to push your feet and especially your toes to the very end point of the shoe. Wearing this type of shoe every day can affect your feet and your toes, leaving you feeling restricted and quite often sore and aching. It is not only your toes that can suffer but your posture and back can be affected and are likely to suffer the consequences of wearing high heels. If you are standing for long periods of time, you would be best to wear something more comfortable if you’re on your feet every day. Not only should you have comfort in mind but you should also be mindful of injury prevention.

If it is a requirement to wear smart looking shoes for your job, it might be a good idea to buy a pair of comfortable, well fitted shoes to wear to work and back home again. Wear the high heels just for the office. With high heels in mind, you don’t have to buy shoes that have extremely high heels. You can vary the height of the heels so you’re not putting your feet under pressure every day in the same position, which would be kinder to your feet. By wearing different heel heights it will keep your leg muscles feeling flexible and looking shapelier as well. To add to the comfort of high heels, if you need to wear them, you could look for insoles or seek a podiatrist that will be able to assist you in making sure you are taking good care of your feet by giving them as much support as possible.

The right shoe is vital for the health of your feet. When you’re shopping for shoes, each style or brand of shoe may not be the same as the next. Which is why if you’re a size 7, it doesn’t necessarily mean all the shoes you try on will be the same size. If the shoe that you try on is too tight, go up one size. Some brands have “half” sizes and you may want to try your size and a half. You don’t always have to wear the size you normally wear if the size up is a better fit. Your foot should not be too wide for the shoe and you should be able to wiggle your toes at the tip of the shoe, making sure there is enough room to move.

Get into a daily Foot Care habit.

Foot Care

It’s a good idea to get a foot care routine happening, for keeping your feet feeling healthy and hygienic. There are many conditions such as calluses, bunions and athletes foot for example, that can leave your feet feeling very sore at the end of the day. Caring for your feet will leave them feeling healthier and in great shape.

Here are a few Foot Care tips:

  1. It is always important to wash your feet on a daily basis. Your feet is the one part of your body that gets sweatier than any other part. Getting into the habit of keeping your feet clean is important by routinely washing your feet of a morning and of a night time. There is nothing better than climbing into bed with clean, moisturized feet.
  2. When you wash your feet, wash them with warm water only and a little soap. Foot Care This will rid your feet of any sweat or dirt. This will also wash any bacteria away from in between your toes and feet. While your feet are still wet, clean underneath the tone nails to make sure nothing stays there. Even if you wear closed shoes everyday, there will be some dead skin under the tone nails that needs to be removed. Scrub around the tone nail with a soft tooth brush to get rid of dead skin.       Foot Care
  3. With a soft towel, dry your feet well and especially between the toes. If you don’t dry your toes, cracks can appear and get itchy while sometimes bleeding. This can be extremely uncomfortable. It’s often a good breeding ground for bacteria if you don’t dry between your toes.
  4. It’s important to trim your toe nails regularly to keep them clean. This will keep them in a healthy condition. Learning how to trim them properly will help to avoid ingrown toenails. To avoid an ingrown toenail, cut straight across without trimming the edges to a curve. Some people prefer to have a pedicure but if you do choose to trim your nails yourself, nail clippers can often do the job better than small scissors. After clipping the nails, file them to make the sharp edges a little Foot Care softer.
  5. Moisturizing your feet daily will help soften and keep dryness at bay. If you have any calluses or dry areas, exfoliate before you apply your moisturizer. It is important to remember to keep the moisturizer away from in between your toes. Keeping the spaces between your toes dry will stop them from cracking and bleeding and creating a place for fungus to grow. Buy a lotion or cream that draws moisture into the skin would be a great investment.

If you follow this routine on a regular basis, you don’t even have to visit the salon anymore for your regular pedicure….maybe only for a treat.

Add a bit of color to your tone nails and you have feet that is ready for that lovely sandals every day.

Confidence Comes From Being Happy

Confidence Comes From Being Happy

Confidence comes from being happy and content with who you are.

A good way to grow your confidence is to keep a diary in order to remind yourself of your strengths and your achievements. Writing your daily positive thoughts and achievements, creates the feeling of gratitude, in understanding your capabilities and achievements on a daily basis. Keeping a diary also enables you to take note of the amount of growth you have developed over time.

When you have an understanding of your strengths and your own personal traits, you’ll begin to develop a positive mindset, which, in turn will develop a stronger self-confidence.

As a result, your inner beauty will glow an shine through when you are confident with who you are.

‘Self-esteem is your opinion of yourself. People with healthy self-esteem like themselves and value their achievements. While everyone lacks confidence occasionally, people with low self-esteem feel unhappy or unsatisfied with themselves most of the time. This can be remedied but it takes attention and daily practice to boost self-esteem.

Characteristics of low self-esteem

Typically, a person with low self-esteem:

  • Is extremely critical of themselves
  • Downplays or ignores their positive qualities
  • Judges themselves to be inferior to their peers
  • Uses negative words to describe themselves such as stupid, fat, ugly or unlovable
  • Has discussions with themselves (this is called ‘self talk’) that are always negative, critical and self blaming
  • Assumes that luck plays a large role in all their achievements and doesn’t take the credit for them
  • Blames themselves when things go wrong instead of taking into account other things over which they have no control such as the actions of other people or economic forces
  • Doesn’t believe a person who compliments them.

Low self-esteem and quality of life

A low self-esteem can reduce the quality of a person’s life in many different ways, including:

  • Negative feelings – the constant self-criticism can lead to persistent feelings of sadness, depression, anxiety, anger, shame or guilt.
  • Relationship problems – for example they may tolerate all sorts of unreasonable behaviour from partners because they believe they must earn love and friendship, cannot be loved or are not loveable. Alternatively, a person with low self-esteem may feel angry and bully other people.
  • Fear of trying – the person may doubt their abilities or worth and avoid challenges.
  • Perfectionism – a person may push themselves and become an over-achiever to ‘atone’ for what they see as their inferiority.
  • Fear of judgement – they may avoid activities that involve other people, like sports or social events, because they are afraid they will be negatively judged. The person feels self-conscious and stressed around others and constantly looks for ‘signs’ that people don’t like them.
  • Low resilience – a person with low self-esteem finds it hard to cope with a challenging life event because they already believe themselves to be ‘hopeless’.
  • Lack of self-care – the person may care so little that they neglect or abuse themselves, for example, drink too much alcohol.
  • Self-harming behaviours – low self-esteem puts the person at increased risk of self-harm, for example, eating disorder, drug abuse or suicide.

Causes of low self-esteem

Some of the many causes of low self-esteem may include:

  • Unhappy childhood where parents (or other significant people such as teachers) were extremely critical
  • Poor academic performance in school resulting in a lack of confidence
  • Ongoing stressful life event such as relationship breakdown or financial trouble
  • Poor treatment from a partner, parent or carer, for example, being in an abusive relationship
  • Ongoing medical problem such as chronic pain, serious illness or physical disability
  • Mental illness such as an anxiety disorder or depression.

Seek help for underlying self-esteem problems

Chronic problems can be demoralizing and lead to self-esteem issues. Seek professional advice for problems such as relationship breakdown, anxiety disorder or financial worries.

Self-esteem building

Self-esteem is strongly related to how you view and react to the things that happen in your life. Suggestions for building self-esteem include:

  • Talk to yourself positively – treat yourself as you would your best friend. Be supportive, kind and understanding. Don’t be hard on yourself when you make a mistake.
  • Challenge negative ‘self-talk’ – every time you criticise yourself, stop and look for objective evidence that the criticism is true. (If you feel you can’t be objective, then ask a trusted friend for their opinion.) You’ll realise that most of your negative self-talk is unfounded.
  • Don’t compare yourself to others – recognise that everyone is different and that every human life has value in its own right. Make an effort to accept yourself, warts and all.
  • Acknowledge the positive – for example, don’t brush off compliments, dismiss your achievements as ‘dumb luck’ or ignore your positive traits.
  • Appreciate your special qualities – remind yourself of your good points every day. Write a list and refer to it often. (If you feel you can’t think of anything good about yourself, ask a trusted friend to help you write the list.)
  • Forget the past – concentrate on living in the here-and-now rather than reliving old hurts and disappointments.
  • Tell yourself a positive message everyday – buy a set of ‘inspirational cards’ and start each day reading out a new card and carrying the card’s message with you all day.
  • Stop worrying – ‘worry’ is simply fretting about the future. Accept that you can’t see or change the future and try to keep your thoughts in the here-and-now.
  • Have fun – schedule enjoyable events and activities into every week.
  • Exercise – it is such a good boost to the brain for all kinds of things but especially in combatting depression and helping you to feel good. Targets need to be step by step, such as starting with a walk round the block once a day, enrolling at a local gym class or going for a swim.
  • Be assertive – communicate your needs, wants, feelings, beliefs and opinions to others in a direct and honest manner.
  • Practise the above suggestions every day – it takes effort and vigilance to replace unhelpful thoughts and behaviours with healthier versions. Give yourself time to establish the new habits. Keep a diary or journal to chart your progress.

Your Feet

Your Feet

Your feet

Your feet bear the burden of our day to day living, they carry all the weight of your body and allow you to be mobile. It is important to take care of your feet and make sure that they are in a good condition to be able to take the strain.

Your feet – indicators of health

Because they are so far away from your heart, your feet are often the first part of the body to show something is wrong with the way blood is circulating.

The condition of your toenails can signal the presence of the beginning of several diseases. For example, toenails that are thin, upward curving and with raised ridges on the surface can indicate iron deficiency or anemia (a shortage of iron carried by the blood). Increased nail thickness, or bumps on the nail, can be manifestations of psoriasis, an inherited skin condition.

Your podiatrist will check the condition of your toenails and can discuss the health implications of their appearance or provide a range of treatments for some toenail problems.

Your toenails

Your feet

The major parts of the toenail are: the nail itself (nail plate); the matrix, from where the nail grows; the lunula, the white moon-shaped area at the base of the nail; the nail bed, the tissue on which the nail lies; and the sulcus, the groove at the side in which the nail sits.

Toenails grow constantly. Healthy nails are pink, free of dirt and impairment and grow along the grooves normally. It takes up to 12 months to replace the toenail of your big toe.

Who gets nail problems?

Toenails of people of all ages can undergo a range of changes, come of which are relatively common. They can become thick, brittle, curved, discolored, infected, bumpy and grooved. In some cases, the nail falls off and a new one grows. As we grow older, we are more likely to develop toenail problems.

What causes nail problems?

Toenail problems may be causes by warts, tumors under the nail, trauma, infection or poor circulation. Major toenail problems can be caused by incorrectly fitting shoes, which press too tightly on the toenails. Injury, such as bruising under the nail and infection, can cause permanent nail deformity.

Common conditions and treatment

Your feet

Ingrown toenails are common toenail problems. They may be caused by improperly trimmed toenails, very curved edges of nails, pressure or repeated trauma to the feet from normal activities. The tendency to get ingrown toenails may also be inherited. Pain in the groove (sulcus) of the toenail can also be due to a corn or callus under the nail edge.

Most cases will require conservative treatment, while others may need a minor surgical correction that can conducted in your podiatrist’s rooms using a local anaesthetic.

Thickened nails: is a common condition; a single thickened nail is usually the result of injury to the nail bed, such as dropping something heavy on your toes, or fungal infection. They can be easily and painlessly thinned down by your podiatrist.

Fungal infections: are amongst the most troublesome of nail conditions to treat. They are often characterised by thickening, discolouration and separation of the nail from the nail bed. In some cases, the nail crumbles. These infections tend to stay in the nail if they are not treated, and can infect the nail bed.

There are a range of anti-fungal medications available for treatment. Your podiatrist can assist with trimming and care of out-of-shape nails.

Other infections: causes inflammation of the matric (onychia) and inflammation of the tissue adjacent to the nail (paronychia). In people with lowered immunity, this may lead to serious complications, including more widespread infection extending up the leg. Your podiatrist can assist in detecting such infections early and form a suitable treatment plan.

Trauma: to the nails may lead to permanent nail deformity. This can be cared for by regular, non-painful podiatric treatment, involving filing and possibly the use of a special drill.

Older people

Older people with poor circulation are prone to fragile, brittle or thickened nails.

Many older people do not have the strength, flexibility or eyesight to trim their nails, especially if the nails are deformed. They should seek podiatric care for these services and give advice regarding safe self-care.

Warning signs

Any sudden changed in color or shape of the nail, sign of infection, development of a freckle under the nail or pain should be discussed with your podiatrist. Your portraitist can diagnose the problem and then offer an appropriate treatment.

Taking care of your nails

Your feet

  • Trim toenails straight across to a length just below the end of the toe
  • Use a strong pair of nail clippers
  • After clipping, smooth nails with a file or emery board, using downward strokes
  • Wear only properly fitted shoes, not short or narrow ones
  • Wash feet regularly especially between the toes, and dry thoroughly

Wear socks or stockings that are not too restrictive, unless they’re prescribed.
