How to make sure that you have smooth feet all year round

Foot soak:

To treat yourself by incorporating into your beauty regime, a foot soak once or twice a week. That would be a good way to relax and to ease the pressures off your feet. It’s quite simple and a great way to take time out for yourself and to pamper those feet that quite often get forgotten.

Depending on the type of ailment you’re suffering from, whether it be dry or cracked skin for example, finding the correct products to use, should help significantly to soothe your feet. You should be careful what you use as some ingredients such as vinegar can dry out the skin. Make sure commercial products work on your skin by applying a bit on your skin, before making the investment.

½ cup milk

½ cup water

2 tablespoons of olive oil

4 drops patchouli oil (or any oil you choose)

2 tablespoons of honey

Heat the water till it is warm enough to put your feet into. Add the milk and other ingredients. Place your feet in slowly and sit for 15 minutes or so to allow the ingredients to do their work. Your feet should feel soft and relaxed. Dry with a towel and moisturize with a good moisturizer.

One can say that sleep and beauty go hand in hand.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say, don’t get enough sleep and beauty goes out the door, but a good night sleep is vital for a good appearance.  A good night sleep may be very close to a fountain of youth(if there were such a thing), when it comes to your daily beauty routine. The cells of your body repair themselves and recover while you sleep and that ads to the benefits of looking younger than you are. Most of us want to look younger than what we really are and the key is to get enough sleep during the night. Seven to nine hours of quality sleep, should do it for most of us.

Sleeping during the day, even if it is possible to have your bedroom dark, is not the same, since there are just too much noise.

According to Dr. Michael Breus, a Clinical Phychologist, your appearance is likely to be affected, if you are getting less than six hours of sleep. Dr. Breus said: “Skin becomes dull and you don’t get those rosy cheeks anymore.”

Sleep and Beauty  I’m sure that you have already experienced it yourself as well, at least once in your life. When you had to work late, or your kids were sick and you had to stay up. When you don’t get enough sleep, you may get dark circles under the eyes or puffy eyes.

Good sleep habits

Good sleep habits are often referred to as good sleep hygiene. There are many things that can be done to improve sleep. While most of these are common sense, life is very busy and we often don’t think about them. Here, we will give you some guidelines for what you should and should not do for a good night’s sleep. Many people have trouble with their sleep. If you are one of them, some of these simple things may help.

What should I do in the evening?

Try to go to bed at the same time each night. The body has an internal clock and hormones that control sleepiness and wakefulness. This clock works best if there is a regular sleep routine. When working well, you will feel sleepy at bed time. Try not to ignore this by staying up, as this is a window of opportunity for sleep. Going to bed too early can also disturb your sleep. In the hour before going to bed, it is important to have a relaxing sleep routine. This may include a warm bath, reading quietly or a warm milk drink. Going to the the toilet is important to avoid having to get up in the night.

Are there things that I should not do in the evening?
Caffeine should be avoided for at least 4 hours before going to bed. This isn’t just coffee and tea. It is also found in colas and soft drinks. Smoking also makes it difficult to go to sleep, so there should be no cigarettes before going to bed or during the night. Alcohol might help you get to sleep, but it will make it harder to stay asleep. It makes sleep problems like snoring and sleep apnoea worse as well. Activities that are stimulating should be avoided in the hour before bed. This includes moderate exercise, computer games, television, movies and important discussions. Being in brightly lit environments or the blue light of the computer can reduce evening levels of the a sleep-promoting hormone, melatonin. Don’t fall asleep on the couch during the evening as it reduces your sleep pressure and makes it harder to fall asleep when you go to bed.

What about meals and sleep?
It is important to not be hungry at bedtime. But having a full stomach makes it difficult to sleep. The evening meal should be at least 2 hours before bedtime. Some people find that having a small snack at bedtime helps them to sleep better.

What should I do when I’m in bed?

The bed must be comfortable. Warmth is important, both the temperature of the room and having enough blankets. Having warm hands and feet is essential. The mattress, pillow and blankets should be comfortable and restful. There should be no distractions in the bedroom. This may mean removing the television, computer, radio and telephone. If there is a clock in the bedroom, it should be covered to avoid watching clock-watching. If possible, don’t allow children and pets to be a disturbance.

What should I do during the day?
One very important thing is to stay out of bed. Some people use the bedroom as a living room, where they study, watch television, make phone calls and read books. This will make it harder to sleep. The brain will no longer link the bed with sleep. The bedroom should be used for sleeping and intimacy only. As a rule, exercise is good for sleep, but not just before going to bed. The best times are in the morning and before the evening meal. Being out in the sun during the day will improve sleep at night. This will help with yourbody clock and the melatonin levels in the body. It is best to be outside in the early part of the day.

What should I do if I can’t get to sleep?

Sleep is not something that you can force to happen. If you are not asleep within 20 to 30 minutes of going to bed you should get up. Go to another darkened room and sit quietly. Do not watch television, use a computer, eat, drink or do household chores. When you feel tired again go back to bed. This helps your mind link bed with sleep – not with being unhappy and not sleeping. Do not look at the clock because no matter what time it is you will have an emotional reaction. Rest is good – it does not have to be sleep. Don’t label yourself as an insomniac.

What if you can’t shut off your mind?
Some people lie awake in bed at night and cannot switch of their thoughts. If this is a problem, set aside a ‘worry time’ during the evening. Use this time to think about what has been happening during the day, make plans and possible solutions. Then don’t think about these things until the next day. Keep the hour before bed as your wind down time – develop a routine that prepares your body and mind for sleep. Listen to quiet music or do relaxation. Remember that we can never shut off our mind. Our thoughts continue all the time, so try to make them calmer thoughts. Create a favorite fantasy place. Or daydream of your favorite holiday spot. If other thoughts come in, consider them for a moment and then try to gently replace them with calm thoughts.

Are naps good or bad?
It depends. Remember that the average adult sleeps for between seven and nine hours a day. Naps will take up some of this time. But if you are taking short afternoon naps without any problems, then you might want to keep doing this. On the other hand, naps in the evening, or dozing in front of the TV, can make it harder to get to sleep at night.

What about prescription medicines and sleep?
Some of these will make it easier to get to sleep. But others will keep you awake. It is best to take them only when your doctor or pharmacist says so. Sleeping pills can be good when a specific event in your life is making it hard to sleep. But they are only a short term fix. If you take regular doses, they will stop working. Once you stop them, you might find it harder to get to sleep. Also they can make you sleepy during the day.

How much sleep do I need?
Most adults need between seven and nine hours sleep each day. But this may include naps and time spent dozing in front of the TV. Be realistic about your needs. Younger people have different sleep needs. If you are a poor sleeper it is very important you do not spend too long in bed. Spend no more than 8 or so hours in your bed. If you spend more time in bed, you will be telling your body that it’s OK to drift in and out of sleep all night. Going to bed later at night may be the single best thing to help reduce your wake time during the night in bed.

How important is a routine?
Try to stick to a good sleep routine. Improved sleep will not happen as soon as changes are made. But if good sleep habits are maintained, sleep will certainly get better. It is not possible to do the same thing every day, but it should be most days. Different things work for different people. Find what works for you and stick with it. If you try everything and your sleep still doesn’t get any better, then see your GP.

If you feel that the air is dry, you may even want to apply extra during the day on the exposed areas of your skin. Keep a hand moisturizer at every point where you wash your hands. If you do this, you won’t forget to moisturize your hands after washing them.

Clothes made from synthetic fabric, may be very convenient when it comes to doing the laundry, yet, it most certainly doesn’t have the great qualities of natural fabrics. Women’s Linen dresses will not only be more cool and absorbent in summer, it will provide you with a natural warmth in winter as well.

In case you don’t know what linen is made of, I have found an articles to explain exactly what it is made of and what the qualities are. I have found an article to provide you with the comparison between cotton and linen. Both natural, yet there are a few differences.

You may want to consider wearing  natural fibers like linen or cotton, rather than synthetic garments.

Linen Fiber:

Linen is a cellulose fibers derived from the stem of the flax plant or a fabric made from these fibers. Linen fibers are much stronger and more lustrous that cotton; they yield cool, absorbent fabrics that wrinkle easily. Fabrics with linen-like texture and coolness but with good wrinkle resistance can be produced from manufactured fibers and blends.
Properties/Characteristics of Linen Fiber:
Linen is comfortable, good strength, twice as strong as cotton, hand-washable or dry-cleanable, crisp hand tailors, well absorbent dyes and prints, well light weight to heavy weight, no static or pilling problems, fair abrasion resistant etc. Basically there are two types of properties of linen fibers. One is physical properties and another is chemical properties.
Physical Properties of Linen: 

Physical properties of linen fibers are given below:

  1. Tensile Strength: Linen is a strong fiber. It has a tenacity of 5.5 to 6.5 gm/den. The strength is greater than cotton fiber.
  2. Elongation at break: Linen does not stress easily. It has an elongation at break of 2.7 to 3.5 %.
  3. Color: The color of linen fiber is yellowish to grey.
  4. Length: 18 to 30 inch in length.
  5. Lusture: It is brighter than cotton fiber and it is slightly silky.
  6. Elastic Recovery: Linen fiber has not enough elastic recovery properties like cotton fiber.
  7. Specific Gravity: Specific gravity of linen fiber is 1.50.
  8. Moisture Regain (MR %): Standard moisture regain is 10 to 12%.
  9. Resiliency: Very poor.
  10. Effect of Heat: Linen has an excellent resistance to degradation by heat. It is less affected than cotton fiber by the heat.
  11. Effect of Sun Light: Linen fiber is not affected by the sun light as others fiber. It has enough ability to protect sun light.
Chemical Properties of Linen: 

Linen is a natural cellulosic fiber and it has some chemical properties. Chemical properties of the linen fiber are given below:

  1. Effect of Acids: Linen fiber is damaged by highly densified acids but low dense acids does not affect if it is wash instantly after application of acids.
  2. Effects of Alkalis: Linen has an excellent resistance to alkalis. It does not affected by the strong alkalis.
  3. Effects of Bleaching Agents: Cool chlorine and hypo-chlorine bleaching agent does not affect the linen fiber properties.
  4. Effect of Organic Solvent: Linen fiber has high resistance to normal cleaning solvents.
  5. Effect of Micro Organism: Linen fiber is attacked by fungi and bacteria. Mildews will feed on linen fabric, rotting and weakling the materials. Mildews and bacteria will flourish on linen under hot and humid condition. They can be protected by impregnation with certain types of chemicals. Copper Nepthenate is one of the chemical.
  6. Effects of Insects: Linen fiber does not attacked by moth-grubs or beetles.
  7. Dyes: It is not suitable to dye. But it can be dye by direct and vat dyes.

Linen Vs. Cotton?
Cotton and Linen are both natural fibers and are both produced form their respective plants. However this is where differences begin:The Linen Plant:
Technically linen is a vegetable! Linen fibers are spun from the cellulose fibers that grow inside of the stalks of the flax plant. This plant was supposedly first cultivated 8000 years back. The flax plant grows in subtropical to temperate climates with some of the best flax coming from France and Belgium.

The Cotton Plant:
The Cotton plant is a shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions around the world. Cotton is a soft, fluffy staple fiber that grows in a boll, or protective capsule, around the seeds of cotton plants. The cotton fiber is almost pure cellulose. Some of the best Cotton from around the world is produced in Egypt, US, India etc.Fabric Properties of Linen
Linen fabrics soften as they are used. Traditionally in Europe it was not uncommon for families to inherit Linen sheets from their parents. Vintage linen is soft and luxurious and possesses a fabric handle that is generally very difficult to replicate with any mechanized process.Fabric properties of Cotton
The Cotton fiber was discovered much later than linen, however it has grown in usage well past Linen, this is on account of both the fiber’s excellent fabric feel on skin, and through the ease of high volume cultivation of cotton.
1. Сotton fabrics are durable and chemically stable. This means that they can handle the chemicals in human sweat, soaps, detergents etc quite well.
2. Cotton has an impressive water absorbance capacity. In humid atmosphere cotton fabric can absorb 27% of water without feeling damp.
3. Cotton fabrics are breathable and hypoallergenic. Most importantly its low thermal conductivity makes it an ideal fabric across seasons.
4. Cotton fabrics have very low elasticity characteristics, so they almost never stretch, even though they do shrink in hot temperatures when wet.

Linen Vs. Cotton
– Linen has almost twice the strength of cotton.
– Linen has a crisp handle compared to cotton that has a much softer handle.
– Both fabrics are breathable, hypo allergenic and have a good hand feel.
– Linen has a higher moisture absorbency than cotton and this is one of the keys to the longevity of Linen fabrics.
– Both Linen and Cotton are plant based fibers, produced from cellulose. They are both structurally sound fibers and which ensures that cotton and linen products both retain their shapes.
– Linen is significantly more environment friendly, as it needs less water and far lesser levels of chemicals to thrive.
– Cotton is intrinsically a fine fiber, and that allows it to be able to be woven into a higher thread count fabric. Linen is a much thicker fiber and gets spun and woven into technically a lower thread count fiber. Linen’s intrinsic properties however make it a superior, and durable fabric.
The last point really determines whether you would choose Linen or Cotton fabric for a shirt. You would go with Cotton if you were looking for fineness of fabric and softness. You will on the other hand pick Linen if you were looking for Fabric luster and longevity of the garment.

What psycho-social problems does acne cause?

 

The psychological and social impacts of acne are a huge concern, especially because acne affects adolescents at a crucial period when they are developing their personalities. During this time, peer acceptance is very important to the teenager and unfortunately it has been found that there are strong links between physical appearance and attractiveness and peer status.

In recent years, open discussions between patients and medical professionals have revealed the impact acne has on the psyche. The following are some of the problems that patients with acne may face.

 

Self esteem and body image

  • Some embarrassed acne patients avoid eye contact.
  • Some acne sufferers grow their hair long to cover the face. Girls tend to wear heavy make-up to disguise the pimples, even though they know that this sometimes aggravates their acne. Boys often comment: “Acne is not such a problem for girls because they can wear make-up”.
  • Truncal acne can reduce participation in sport such as swimming or rugby because of the need to disrobe in public changing rooms.

Social withdrawal/relationship building

  • Acne, especially when it affects the face, provokes cruel taunts from other teenagers.
  • Some find it hard to form new relationships, especially with the opposite sex.
  • At a time when teenagers are learning to form relationships, those with acne may lack the self confidence to go out and make these bonds. They become shy and even reclusive. The main concern is a fear of negative appraisal by others. In extreme cases a social phobia can develop.

  • Some children with acne refuse to go school, leading to poor academic performance.

Does acne cause depression?

In some patients the distress of acne may result in depression. This must be recognized and managed. Signs of depression include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Mood disturbance
  • Behavioral problems
  • Wakefulness
  • Spontaneous crying
  • Feelings of unworthiness.

In teenagers, depression may manifest as social withdrawal (retreat to the bedroom or avoidance of peers) or impaired school performance (lower grades or missed assignments). Severe depression from acne has resulted in attempted suicide and, unfortunately, successful suicide. Worrying statements include: “I don’t want to wake up in the morning”; “I’d be better off dead”; “I’m worthless”; “You’d be better off without me”. Parents, friends and school counselors need to take heed when they start to hear these types of comments.

Rarely, depression can be associated with acne treatment, particularly isotretinoin. There is much controversy about whether the drug causes depression. However, it is clear that depression often results from acne and the psychological disturbances described above.
